(All our printer-partner relationships are confidential so we aren't going to reveal any names. We told this story and revealed the end customer because the business has been finished for over 3 years.)
We have a long and successful history of supporting our printer-partners. Our best example is with a printer on the East Coast we will call MP for privacy reasons. In the late 90's, Zeneca corporation which later became Syngenta asked MP to partner with us. Zeneca had known us as an excellent direct supplier for many years.
MP and JH Bertrand developed a plan to supply Zeneca with our Mega Label product to label its 1 gallon and 2.5 gallon herbicide products. MP was an expert at manufacturing thick stapled booklets so it was a natural partnership. We were happy to have MP handle the account so we became its supplier rather than Zeneca's.
In late 1997, MP began shipping booklets via a one day carrier to JHB's Mega Label plant. The distance between the two plants is just over 400 miles. Over the course of four years, we supplied over $2,500,000 in Mega Labels. We developed such a system that we were able to supply three major Zeneca plants located in Omaha, NE-Bayport, TX and Little Rock, Arkansas with just in time deliveries. We routinely made emergency shipments and are proud to say that we never shut down a production line. Both MP and JH Bertrand have speedy production operations and good communication so the partnership worked well.
There is no question that without this partnership, both companies would have had difficulty in keeping the account. Our partnership helped us become a better supplier to Zeneca and staved off very severe competition from a much larger competitor. Unfortunately, in 2002 after Syngenta was formed by the merger of Zeneca and Novartis, we lost the business to CCL. CCL had a contract with Novartis and was able to extend that contract to Syngenta.
If you are a printer looking to partner on a booklet label project, please be assured that we will work closely with you to make the partnership a success.
JH Bertrand has over two dozen printer-partner relationships in various stages of development.
